Pregnant for the fourth time, out of work and on public assistance, I enrolled in the Goodwill Employment Training Center in their Word Processing Program. I graduated with a 4.0 average and completed a work experience at the Urban League of Pittsburgh. In July of 1999, I got a full-time job, but after nine months, I became ill and required major surgery. I found myself back on public assistance.
It was at this time that I found out about CareerLink and the SPOC Program. I searched the CareerLink website for schools and courses. There, I found the Modern Office Systems Training (MOST) program offered through Community College of Allegheny County.
Then I searched the CareerLink website for jobs. When the information specialist at CareerLink got promoted to another position, the director of MOST recommended me for the specialist's old job. I was interviewed and got the job. Today, I continue to take college credit courses; I want to set an example and serve as a role model for my four sons.
