Barbara Philie

It was a Thursday when Barbara Philie of New Kensington received a letter from unemployment saying she soon would no longer be receiving benefits. Prompted by the letter, she decided to search for a job at the CareerLink website.

Within minutes of visiting the site, www.careerlinkpittsburgh.com, she identified an opportunity that suited her skills and qualifications. She posted her resume in response to the job order.

Ten minutes later, the phone rang. A representative from a local staffing company had reviewed her resume. They asked Philie to come to their offices to further discuss the position the very next day, a Friday.

On Monday, Philie interviewed for the position with the company represented by the staffing agency and was offered the job on the spot. As a pre-employment requirement, she visited a doctor's office to receive a physical the next day, Tuesday.

On Wednesday, five days after visiting the CareerLink website, Philie started her new job as a receptionist with Friendship-based non-profit, the Children's Home of Pittsburgh. She works at Child's Way, one of the Children's Home's three programs. Philie had worked for several local hospitals but faced many lay-offs over the years.

Philie tells others of her story of success with CareerLink. "I keep a post-it note of the website address on my computer screen in case anyone searching for a job asks for advice," says Philie.

Joe Stratico, former Executive Director of Pittsburgh CareerLink, says, "While we recognize job seekers look for a job in a number of different ways, our database of job listings is chock full of immediately available opportunities. Job seekers don't have to wait for the Sunday paper to apply for a job."
