Preparing your resume may be the most important step of your job search. A good resume will grab an employer's attention and lead to an interview. Writing a resume can be challenging, and PA CareerLink Pittsburgh/Allegheny County offers additional help at our free workshops (click here to view our workshop and computer class schedule).

RESUME STYLES

There are three main styles of resumes: functional, chronological, and combination. Functional is best when you have less experience in the field, whereas chronological is best suited for those job seekers who have a solid amount of job experience. Combination takes elements from these two styles and creates a third style.

In order to use the following templates, please overwrite the text in the documents with your own information.

CONSTRUCTING YOUR RESUME

The basic parts of a resume for any job seeker are as follows: Heading, Job Objective, Summary of Qualification, Education, Experience, and References.
  • Heading: Include name and contact information. This should include mailing address, phone number, and email address (one that you check frequently).

  • Job Objective: What type of job you are looking for and where you are looking to pursue this. If you have little work experience, try to cater this objective to the job you are applying for. If you are more experienced, base this statement on your experience as it relates to your desired position.

  • Qualifications Summary: Make this section a brief paragraph (2 to 3 sentences) of what skills you offer. This should be a quick review of your resume for the employer.

  • Education: Details in this section should be highlighted less the longer you are out of school. List all of your latest schooling, even when you have not received a degree or certification. If you are a college graduate, you can omit your high school graduation information. You should never include your junior high or elementary education on your resume.

  • Experience: Refrain from listing only job titles; be as detailed as possible while still being concise. Use strong words that will give a clear picture instead of lengthy phrases. Promote any skills that relate to the job: people skills, computer skills, task-oriented, goal setter, hard-working, etc.

  • References: Ensure you have three solid references, but do not include those on your resume. Simply state "References Available Upon Request." Get permission to use any professors, employers, etc. as references ahead of time. This way you can also verify phone numbers and contact information.
